Barbican Hidden Tours

Image

I’ve been meaning to do a Hidden Tour of the Barbican Centre for ages.  My friend and I arrived to find ourselves the only participants for the tour.  We were greeted by Vicktor who looked after us for the following hour.

Vicktor gave us a brief history of the Barbican before we disappeared behind the scenes and entered the bowels of the building.  The next hour was a bit like being a concrete bunker.  A little disorientating to say the least.

We traversed the building exploring behing behind the scenes at the theatre, gazing down from the fly tower (I know the lingo now), having the hall to ourselves and eventually emerging in the wonderful conservatory.

Good Karpa

Squeezed in between MacDonalds and the general bustle of Kings Cross is Karpa.

This cafe and restaurant is tricky to categorise.  We could be somewhere else in Europe, maybe Prague.  I visited in the morning and was warmly greeted and shown to my seat.  The service was attentive and helpful down to finding a power socket for my laptop.

Cooked breakfasts and healthy options are on the menu.  I tried some very good poached eggs, boston beans and toast.  After the good eggs I was expecting a memorable coffee – sadly that was  bit non-descrip.

The back of the ground floor has a double height ceiling and plenty of plants.  The basement has a load more tables but feels a little like you’ve walked into a someones private party.

All in all this is a great spot if you’re at Kings Cross and fancy a bite or need to have a meeting.

Quirky @ Tasty

Good news for Dishoom. I expected another chain – the new model of small dishes – fine but nothing special.

There were logistical issues but the quirky friendly service made up for it. Dishoom seem to have allowed their staff to retain a personality – such a nice touch. The food was great. Black Dhal wins for me. I’ll be back.

Starving indeed

I had my first experience at Absolutely Starving by London Bridge today.

I left feeling starved of customer service – meaning a helpful attitude and a smile. The layout is reminiscent of some Californian outlets but with on if the charm.

Beware – if you’re not sure how the ordering process works, be prepared to be frowned at.
